In the study of geology, the child meets the bones of the Earth -
its structure, memory, and resilience.

Colorful hand-drawn diagram of a volcano showing features like tephra, volcanic bombs, lava flow, magma, vent, conduit, and layers, with a smoky eruption at the top and green hills at the base, placed on a wooden surface with colored pencils nearby.

What’s included:

  • over 75 pre-recorded videos that cover a year’s worth of geologic exploration & lessons for your child.

  • Guidance and suggestions for Main Lesson Pages (for each topic.)

  • Art lessons using charcoal, watercolor, and colored pencils. (no prior experience necessary!)

  • Bonus National Park Project (more about this, below.)

  • Discussion for adults about:

    • possible ways you might schedule the lessons

    • ways the Geology curriculum meets a typical 6th grade child (families w/ children different grades are welcome to use this course! We’re choosing to focus this discussion on the 6th grade as this is often when Geology is taught in Waldorf schools.)

    • Main Lesson Books - their purpose and some thoughts about reasonable exceptions for a 6th grader.

A few important details:

  • On the day you register you will receive access to all the lessons.

  • We’ll also provide you w/ a detailed supply list

  • As with all of our other courses, once enrollment is complete, you will have access to these lessons for the lifetime of the course. They will continue to be accessible no matter if you are able to watch them before the end of your school year or not

  • The course is designed for parents and/or children to watch and work with.

  • A watercolor painting of mountains, trees, and a fiery landscape within a circular frame, with a paintbrush and palette of watercolor paints nearby.

Part I: The Earth’s Story - A Gentle Introduction to Geology

We begin with the big questions: What is geology? How old is the Earth? Why does it look the way it does today? Through story, art, and exploration, your child will build a strong foundation in Earth science—at a pace and in a style that’s deeply engaging.

    They’ll explore:

    • What geology is—and why it matters

    • Geological time: what it really means

    • The Four Elements and their connection to landforms

    • Earth’s layers: core, mantle, and crust

    • Tectonic plates, Pangea, and how our continents move

    • The Ring of Fire, and daily tectonic activity (like earthquakes)

    • How mountains are formed through uplift and subduction zones

  • Watercolor painting of a volcano erupting with red, orange, yellow, and dark blue colors.

Part II: Volcanoes - The Fiery Beginning

Next, we turn our focus to volcanoes—one of the most powerful forces in shaping the Earth. This section connects geology to awe and wonder, while also building clear understanding.

    Your child will learn:

    • Why volcanoes are considered the beginning of everything

    • Types of volcanoes—with real-world examples

    • Lava: different kinds and how it behaves

    • How volcanoes and earthquakes are connected through tectonic movement

    • What volcanoes leave behind: islands, archipelagos, lava tubes, and geothermal activity

  • A black and white drawing of a figure standing in a cave. The entrance is illuminated behind them.

Part III: All Things Rocks & Landforms

From deep within the Earth to the deserts, glaciers, and canyons we see today—this section brings the rock cycle and Earth’s surface features into focus.

    We’ll cover:

    • The three major rock types: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary

    • The Rock Cycle and its connection to the Four Elements

    • Limestone caves and other underground wonders

    • How the Earth’s landscapes formed: mountains, canyons, and more

    • How to read the story of our planet in the rocks beneath our feet

Bonus Project: Explore a National Park — and So Much More!

As a special bonus inside the Geology course, your child will take on a meaningful research and creative project: the National Parks Project. It’s an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a hands-on way —> through geology, yes, but also through writing, interviewing, illustrating, and presenting.

Students will choose a National Park - anywhere in the world - to research in depth. Along the way, they’ll build:

  • Research & Note Taking Skills
Using both library books and official park websites, they’ll learn how to gather information and organize it meaningfully.

  • Language Arts Foundations
Through writing about the park’s geology, flora, and fauna, students practice paraphrasing, quoting, and citing sources correctly—while learning to avoid plagiarism.

  • Social Confidence
With a guided phone interview (yes, a real one!) with a park ranger or representative, they’ll gain comfort with phone etiquette and thoughtful questioning.

  • Artistic & Visual Storytelling
Maps, plant and animal illustrations, and a highlighted geological feature will bring their poster to life.

  • Optional Oral Presentation
For those who are ready, this is a great opportunity to practice public speaking in a warm, low-pressure setting with your friends and family.

Whether your child chooses to explore the granite peaks of Torres del Paine, the red earth of Uluru, the glaciers of Banff, or the steaming geysers of Yellowstone, this project brings learning full circle - integrating science, art, communication, and connection.

It’s the kind of project they’ll remember - and be proud to share!

*Important Note: The educator will likely have to be involved in getting this project off the ground, and guiding their student through note taking and other components of this project. We provide a detailed outline, helpful pdf’s, and other indications for you to follow and adapt as you see fit!

“Waldorfish has become one of our family’s favorite resources!
We’re so thankful for the many ways you are foundational to our learning journey.” ~M.L.

Your Guide:

Caitlin Amajor is excited to bring her love of art and teaching to the Waldorfish community! As a Waldorf student growing up in a small Northern California town, Caitlin’s love and appreciation of artistic and experiential learning began at a young age. With the encouragement of her parents, Caitlin pursued her certificate in Waldorf teacher training after college, and taught in the middle school grades as a class teacher for seven years. While the list is long, some of her highlights of being a teacher are teaching geometry and physics, watercolor painting, and observing the many triumphs and successes of her beloved students. Caitlin enjoys discussing and expanding Waldorf pedagogy and how it can evolve in the modern world, and also has a wealth of knowledge (because of much trial and error!) around the practical elements of teaching on a day to day basis. She offers helpful tips and observations from her own experience, and inspires others to explore the wide-ranging and artistic realm of geometry, geology, and botany.
